What do you believe?

You believe in anthropogenic causes for global climate change.

I believe temperature variations on the earth’s surface are caused by normal fluctuations in that big ball of fusion at the center of the solar system.

You believe that government should raise taxes on the pretense of taking care of everybody.

I would rather keep more of my income so I can take care of myself.

You believe that we can spend our way out of a recession by taking more money from the wealthiest among us and spending it on social programs that increase dependency.

I believe that the only thing holding our economy back from succeeding is federal interventionism in the free market.

You believe that anyone who doesn’t believe as you do is an uneducated, uninformed racist boob who can’t put two sentences together.

I believe I’ve just proven you wrong.

Fun with Socialism

I’ve been having a conversation with this guy on DeviantArt in a comment thread on this New Democratic Party logo image that I did, and wanted to post it in its entirety for the enlightenment and entertainment of all you fine folks out there. Enjoy!

Stalin-Fan: The new Republican symbol is nearly identical, just with the head in the ass rather than in the ground.

Miketheartist : Says the person calling himself a fan of one of the most evil people in the 20th century. Your opinion is noted, thanks for playing…

Stalin-fan: It’s a joke, genius. But I understand, the absurdity of my avatar just screams reverence.

Miketheartist: Which part was the joke, the head up the ass comment, or your screen name? Just curious…and just FYI, I have issue with a lot of the ass hats on the right side of the aisle too. The Dems are just more fun to poke at

Stalin-fan: My screen name, I’m neither a stalin-fan nor a communist. It’s just a stupid joke because my beliefs often get me branded a communist or stalinist by people who don’t know what either are. I agree that democrats are fun to pick on, in that they’re mostly defenseless and pitiful. But the right certainly provides far more material, they’ve become a textbook on how to sink a party to the bottom of the barrel.

Miketheartist: I feel that way about the ‘Rats…at the very least, they (the Repubs) haven’t slid toward Socialism in the last 40 years…I’m just tired of the Liberal Progressive inundation of our society. When I see kids in 3rd grade singing about Barack Obama, or the 99%, instead of learning, oh I don’t know, math, language, history, it steams me. If we are truly to be a free nation anymore, that has to stop. And we the people have to stop it. And I understand about your screen name. My beliefs have had me branded as a racist, bigoted, homophobic, gun loving, grandma killing, planet hating, greedy, money hoarding fascist.

Stalin-fan: Ah. I share your criticisms of modern “progressives”, although were I to honestly label myself, I would be something of a meritocratic/democratic socialist.. I would hope this isn’t the part where you label me a radical commie stalinist…

Miketheartist: No, I just respectfully disagree with your viewpoints, and think they have no place in a free society. I agree, somewhat, that we should be more of a meritocratic society, but I disagree that socialism is the way to make that happen. Look at the public education system in this country and the unholy alliance of government and teachers unions. More government control means less and less freedom to choose and promote the people you want around you, working for and with you, and leads to (in my opinion) a society that has little or no merit.

Stalin-fan: I don’t think you really know what Socialism means. It doesn’t mean the Soviet Union or Communist China. Socialism just means all citizens contributing to the whole in some degree to benefit all. When we pay our taxes and as a result receive free fire and police service, libraries and education, that is Socialism. The only freedom it would impede is the freedom to grow fat and live in a palace while other citizens rot and starve on the street. It’s not even a matter of more or less government, just different methods of governance.

You could make the case that it is morally wrong for the government to use force if a wealthy person doesn’t pay their taxes, essentially ‘robbing’ them. But I simply don’t buy that. No one gets rich on their own. So if someone attains success via the society, then does not give back to the society afterwards, then they have stolen from the society. They have stolen money, time, resources, labor, education, etc.

And I really don’t want to delve into your “unholy alliance” comment. That’s some far-right Bachmann-esque quackery that I’m just not interested in discussing.

Miketheartist: Really? So because I don’t believe as you do, I’m uninformed? Socialism is an economic system characterized by social (government) ownership of the means of production and cooperative management of the economy; or a political philosophy advocating such a system. The Soviet Union’s full name was the United Soviet Socialist Republic. The Nazi party’s full name was the National Socialist German Worker’s Party. Look at where Greece is today. Or Italy, or Portugal, or Spain. Hell, China is actually moving toward a more capitalistic system because their people are tired of working in sweat shops. It’s the system where the government owns companies, owns the housing, owns the stores, owns the hospitals, and doles those out to every person based on their perception of what that person needs. “From each according to their ability, to each according to his need.” If you believe that society should be merit based, where does merit come into play in a Socialistic society? If we are paying taxes to support the fire and police departments, or the libraries, or public education, how are they free? In fact, those services, and not many more, are the only reason for government to exist in the first place. Also in that regard, I think that the school system should be privatized, because since government took control of it back in the late 70′s, it’s been on a downward spiral. If socialism is so great and wonderful, why has it failed everywhere that it’s been implemented? Because it negates personal freedom. It also confounds innovation, squelches competition, reduces prosperity for the nation as a whole, and gives no incentives to the populace to do anything more than their “fair share.” Please don’t think that I think taxes are wrong, they are not. But when you have a Progressive, graduated tax structure, instead of a flat tax rate for everyone, it leads to cheating and trying to get favors from the government. If our capitalistic society is so bad, why is it that the poorest in this country are better of than the poor of any other socialist nation? Also, how do you guys keep spouting the same talking points about “no one gets rich on their own”? Millions of people in this country have gotten wealthy on their own merits, and yet you guys continue with this line that they have stolen their wealth off the backs of the workers that have themselves gotten wealthy. How is it stealing when the business owners (job creators) have paid capital gains taxes, payroll taxes, property taxes, trade tariffs, on top of paying the normal costs of doing business and paying their employees to work for them? Bigger, all inclusive, government is not the answer, my friend. It’s the problem. Go read my blog, maybe it will enlighten you…

Now, I have to get back to work, supporting myself and my family, like a good little capitalist. Have a good one, Comrade.

Stalin-fan: If you know what Socialism is, why haven’t you spoken a word about it? What you’re talking about here is totalitarian Communism, not Socialism.

And no, no one does get rich on their own. They need buildings built by construction workers (trained by the society), they need workers (trained, housed, and fed by the society) and they need training themselves (from the society.) And all the other people involved are, guess what! The society! You can not get rich on your own if it requires the cooperation of other people. (It’s really sad that I have to explain that.)

Socialism itself is the idea that we all do better the more we help one another. And yet every time that concept comes up, you people scream and howl about totalitarian communism. And then when people point out that you haven’t the faintest idea what you’re shouting about, you throw a tantrum and hurl insults and condescension like a spoiled child.

Now I’d love to read your blog, but if the knowledge and self-control you’ve displayed here is any indication, I think I’d learn more from Spongebob Squarepants.

Miketheartist: Actually that definition at the beginning of my last entry is the textbook definition of Socialism. I think you’re being overly sensitive, because I’ve done none of this screaming and howling that you accuse me of, and you’re the one that’s calling me uninformed, condescending and lacking in self control. If you cannot support your points without demonizing me, then how are you going to convince others that feel more strongly than I do? Construction workers trained by society? More like trained by private industry in the form of trade schools who teach for profit. Workers trained, housed and fed by society? More that they sell their labor for money to their employers and buy and rent what they need to survive in a capitalist society. I’ve seen more innovation from self educated, self employed people in my lifetime than from someone on the government teat. And I count myself among them. Every one of the countries that I named in the last post practices, or practiced, textbook socialism and they are paying the price for it. Now, if you want to have a meaningful conversation about our differences in opinion, fine. But I will not continue with this if you keep insulting me and what I believe. All I have done is present you with facts and truth, you are the one reading tone into these comments.

Stalin-fan: I implied that you lack a thorough understanding of Socialism, which you clearly do, and you threw a tantrum. Now you’re attempting to portray me as the unbalanced one?

Sorry, I’ve lost interest. Clearly there is nothing I can gain from your mind, and you aggressively reject all that comes from mine. So I’ll be on my way.

Miketheartist: Tantrum? I was merely questioning your belief system, just as you have questioned mine. Sorry you couldn’t come up with good, logical answers to those questions. Later, Comrade…

Stalin-fan: Oh look, more poorly disguised passive-aggression. It’s too bad that passive-aggression almost never accompanies actual knowledge of equal proportion, and is often simply a refuge of an unenlightened pompous douche bag who thinks he understands the world, but actually hasn’t a clue of anything he speaks of.

It’s a neurological defense mechanism to prevent your brain from the staggering realization that it knows absolutely jack shit. It’s cute, you’re like a little baby who’s brain just gave up around age 6.

I should say that at this point he blocked me, so did not see the following response.

Miketheartist: Sorry, brother, I’m still not going to take your bait. Have a nice day believing whatever you choose.

Thanks for reading!

The problem with government these days…part one

Hi folks! Welcome back to the blog. Stay for a while, put your feet up.

I’m writing this particular entry in response to some friends of mine. As an artist, as I’m sure you can imagine, I have worked with (and know a lot of) those of the liberal persuasion. However tolerant I am of their beliefs and thoughts, it has always been clear to me that in order to fit in, keep friendships, and generally have a career, I have to be very careful about what I say or mention about my personal beliefs as a conservative libertarian. Recently, because I feel like this country is heading in a very disastrous direction, I’ve been more and more outspoken up to and including the political cartoons on my site (found here ;) CLICK!). I’m hoping that the fabled tolerance and inclusion of the left leaning among you will permit me to try and help you understand why we, the racist, bigoted, homophobic, gun loving, grandma killing, planet hating, greedy, money hoarding right wing lunatics feel the way we do about things. It is my intention to try and present facts, the truth as I know it. If I’m wrong, it’s because my sources are wrong or outdated. If I’m off in my numbers a bit, it’s probably because some of my sources are a couple years old, some of them are estimates, and to be honest, I’ve always been more of a science nerd than a math geek. You get the idea.

The impetus for this blog, aside from a self expressive relief valve, is some recent conversations with friends regarding the Tea Party and Occupy [Whatever] movement. I may have to split this into multiple entries, but I will try to be as concise as possible, and as witty as possible with some admittedly dry subject matter.

First up, let’s talk about capitalism. Not cronyism, nor corporatism. Real, free market, laissez-faire capitalism. Right now this country’s economy (as well as the rest of the worlds) is in turmoil. People from the various community camp-outs (OWS) have blamed the evil banksters and the greedy capitalists on Wall Street for the shape we’re in right now. Most will agree that the tipping point was the collapse of the US housing market. However, there seems to be some disagreement on who, or what, caused this whole mess. Let’s kinda start in the middle, work our way up to the pass, back down to base camp, and then finish out on top. An oversimplified, but accurate, explanation is in order. The government told (forced) the banks that everyone deserved to own a home, regardless of income, credit or any other determinate factor based on “fairness”. These mortgages were bought by the Fed (Fannie and Freddie) and sold, in the form of mortgage backed securities, to Wall Street to play with. Now, please do not think for a moment that those people don’t have some responsibility for their actions, but when you’re told that your juicy MBS is guaranteed by the most powerful government of the richest nation on earth, you would probably think it’s a good risk. Then everything went to crap. Government bailed out all the banks, they bailed out the auto industry, they bailed out people that got them elected, and used OUR money to do it. Now we have government playing venture capitalist with our money, paying back those who put the elected royalty in power.

Now if this were still the free market, laissez-faire capitalist economy that we had (a long time ago in a country far, far away) the government wouldn’t have been involved in the housing market. At all. Ever. They wouldn’t have promoted or subsidized home ownership through artificially low interest rates, the aforementioned Fannie and Freddie, tax breaks and the infamous “Community Reinvestment Act”. In a really free market, the interest rates, housing prices, and all other manner of costs for owning a home would have been regulated by market pressure. Let me say that another way. Without the interference of government, rates and prices would be set with respect to risk, reward, and the clear understanding that making bad loans would be bad. See, the main problem that we have, the big numero uno is a government that thinks that WE THE PEOPLE are incapable of ruling ourselves. They think that the true American Dream, that man should be beholden to no king, no one but himself, is dead. They think that its governments job to take care of everyone. They believe that we are incapable of doing what we have done in this country for over two hundred years. They believe it’s their job, and will fight you tooth and nail to make you let them do it.

There’s more to come kiddies…stay tuned.

Capitalism Profits

These words are not mine, but I agree with 99% of this. I am the 53%.

In a word Capitalism is about profit.

Some call it the invisible hand, laissez-faire, the free-market, the means of production or survival of the fittest but it all comes down to profit.

“How ghastly,” some say. “Why, you’re just greedy and evil.” Oh contraire! Don’t mistake those well-meaning socialist tendencies for something that truly benefits. Follow me down this road and use your critical thinking skills, it will only take a moment to convert the ignorant among us.

Whether people want to admit it or not, we all seek to profit. Profit is about more than just money. It’s about gaining something, ultimately freedom. We give something in return for something else: my time for your money, my money for your gadget, my help for the feeling of making a difference, my compliment for your smile.

We seek profit (freedom) in our finances, in our relationships, in our desire to help others. That feeling of benevolence is actually profiting our own soul. Studies show that generous people are actually happier and live longer… but I digress.

Being broke is like being in bondage. We seek to profit in order to be freed from the shackles of financial slavery. In the same way we endeavor to escape the bondage of loneliness by seeking to profit from the affection of another.

Am I saying that all profit is good? Profit, like money is not necessarily good or bad. Scripture instructs us that it is the Love of money that is the root of all evil, not the money itself. Money and profit are indifferent as it can be used for good or bad. However, good clean honest methods will last longer while profit obtained by some sort of mischief, if found out, will likely be short lived.

It is possible for a bank robber to obtain profit however, chances are that his ill-gotten gains will come to an end if/when he gets caught or sold out for a handsome reward. Even if he doesn’t get caught, the worry of getting caught punishes his soul.

Profit obtained by hard work, providing a good product or service has a better chance of survival but the market will dictate who gets the profit so long as gov’t over-regulation doesn’t try to intervene.

John Adams rightly said, “Freedom is impossible without virtue.” Capitalism is a result of the free-market being allowed to show itself in this way. That said, law and order is necessary to keep order and enjoy peace. Laws must be based on principle, equally enforced, not favoring one group over another.

I believe freedom profits every soul. In fact, this phrase is in my mission statement. “We follow Jefferson’s advice to ‘Preach a crusade against ignorance’ because the truth sets us free and freedom profits every soul.

Yes, freedom profits even the lazy unproductive souls. Here’s why. If a person is lazy he or she will eventually feel the pain of lazy behavior, perhaps by alienating friends and family, becoming poor or worse, homeless and destitute. The pain will hopefully burden the person so much so that they are willing to make a change and get productive. If their lazy behavior did not create any pain they’d likely proceed without regard. Therefore, the freedom which allowed them to get so low they were willing to make a change profited them by helping them realize it is better to be productive.

Likewise, if a person overeats on a constant basis, they will feel the pain of their misbehavior in body-fat, later diabetes or a host of other physical problems. Indeed, they have the freedom to eat but, by design, the pain felt will likely lead to a desire to alleviate the pain hopefully by a willingness to make a change. They discover they have the freedom to eat right or eat less and thereby feel better, look better, live longer all of which profits them personally.

The government doesn’t need to put regulations on this person. That won’t fix the deeper problem. The person needs to put a governor on themselves, on their behavior. It’s true that freedom allows people to get fat, to be broke or to be in a bad relationship but their pain is punishment enough.

How damaging to the person when we try to prop up their bad behavior with coddling and more bad behavior (i.e. endless gov’t programs.)

Would we fault a mother for punishing little Johnny when he runs into the street? Of course not. Hopefully, the pain of his punishment puts enough fear into the young lad to curb him from ever doing it again. The pain is a wise teacher for Johnny’s own benefit.
Would we do little Johnny’s homework for him so he gets a good grade? Preposterous! If we do, little Johnny will never learn to do it for himself creating a cycle of perpetual ignorance.

That same freedom fosters an environment of unlimited potential where we find the best ideas emerge, the most innovative people thrive and the productive people instruct us on the principles of profit.

Capitalism is brave enough to allow the free market to work, to allow some failures to occur but who ever said we are guaranteed happiness? It is in our pursuit of happiness that the failures can and must take place. We have a place in the church and other community organizations where we can help the needy.

Who among the greats were spared the painful failure of defeat? On the contrary, that failure sharpened their skills, taught valuable lessons and in fact brought them to the point of their greatness. Think about the great inventors such as Franklin, the Wright brothers, Edison and more recently Steve Jobs. They were masters at using their failure to discover new frontiers.

They are not just taking. They are giving the world something of great value in exchange for something we are willing to give up…we both profit.

Without the ability to fail, the greatness never comes. That failure is the fertilizer necessary for the seed to grow. Any person who considers themselves a failure today could be a raving success tomorrow.

So, we must continue to be brave enough to allow capitalism to continue, allow the failures to flop, help people when and where we can, learn from our mistakes and foster an environment where we are able to grow and flourish. In a word we need to be left alone, set-free because freedom profits every soul.

So I wish you all the best in your endeavors.
May you be profitable and blessed in many ways.

Godspeed my friend and may you have a capital day

Let’s take it back, America

As I sit and type this, the world is in turmoil. The Middle East and North Africa is on fire. Hell, even Europe is burning, literally and figuratively. There are even frenzied protests in the halls of government here in our great nation. People everywhere are complaining that they’ve been promised much and that they want their fair share.
In Greece, young people are coming to grips with the reality that one must forge one’s own path, or freedom of choice and speech will be clamped down upon by those they rely on for their government dole. Unfortunately, it seems those crazy kids want everyone else to pay for their ride, and they’re going to burn that country to the ground to make sure it happens. The exact same thing is going on in England. Rioters attacked members of the royal family, crooning “off with their heads” like demented despots from children’s tales. One woman I saw on tape was breaking into a store and stealing booze to “get [her] taxes back”.
In Egypt, we were told that a democratic revolution was taking place, with Google and Facebook execs on site to help and spread the word. Then those same execs were dismissed by the religious zealots that seized power in the vacuum, and essentially told they weren’t needed anymore. People who have honestly, and with great passion, called for the downfall of Israel and the United States (the Little and Great Satan’s, respectively) now wield power and, quite probably, the ability to wage such a war. They’ve already started on Israel. Think it’s not coming here?
Ladies and gentlemen, all five of you that read this, we must stand together. Our own government, from the top down, is convinced that we are nothing more than children. They are convinced that we do not have the wherewithal to govern ourselves effectively. That we need professional politicians, our own elected royalty, to tell us what’s best, and how to live our lives. This is absolutely, unequivocally false. I for one am tired of being called a racist because the president happens to be black. I don’t like his policies. I don’t like the people he associated with before, and while, running for office. I don’t like a lot of the people that he’s appointed as paid “czars”, unelected, un-vetted positions of power within our government. If we are indeed supposed to judge someone on the content of their character, and by the company that they keep, then I most assuredly do not like President Obama. A year hence, will we still be in the bind we’re in now? A year hence, will we be better off as a society? Decide what YOU believe. Decide how YOU feel. Read more, question more. WE THE PEOPLE can save this country. Don’t depend on our rulers to do it, because thus far they’ve done a crappy job.
I live in the Socialist Republic of California. This means that soon I will not be able to buy the light bulbs that I want, instead being told that we must bypass a tried and proven technology in favor of something that is deadly to us as humans, but is good for the environment. We will no longer be able to have hot food takeout from a restaurant in Styrofoam™ containers because of too much litter, and rather than increases penalties for littering, we get containers that are biodegradable, but cannot withstand the heat of cooked food, disintegrating and contaminating the food it was meant to keep fresh. It means that the major agricultural Mecca of California’s central valley is now becoming a dustbowl due to the environmental impact of irrigation on a three inch minnow-like fish called a smelt. In case you’re unclear, many people across this country (and the world, for that matter) get groceries grown here in CA. And on the subject of food, why the hell are we burning corn for fuel? Why won’t the EPA let us exploit our own natural resources? It’s been calculated that our oil reserves, natural gas deposits and western oil shale fields contain enough energy in them to eliminate our dependence on countries that wish to see us destroyed. And yet, we continue to dole out billions each year, at higher and higher rates, to other nations that should be considered enemies of the State. Yet our current administration is doubling down on failed businesses because they promise green technologies that pander to their base, and yet they do not work. It’s only a viable alternative energy source if it can take the place of what we’re using now. Nothing in their playbook, solar or wind power, can take the place, right now, of fossil fuels and nuclear energy. Yet through taxation and regulation those industries are taking a beating.
In conclusion, at least for now, I say again: It’s up to us! WE have to decide the course of this great nation. WE have to stand up to the 40-year Senators, and tell them to stop stealing our children’s future to pander to those that keep them in power. Or WE will become subjects for their exploitation. It’s up to us, America.
